Windmill is an open-source developer platform for turning scripts into production-grade workflows, APIs, scheduled jobs, and internal user interfaces. Developers write individual steps in Python, TypeScript, Go, Bash, SQL, or other languages, and Windmill automatically generates an input form and an execution environment for each one, then lets those scripts be composed into multi-step flows through a visual editor or defined as code. It also includes a low-code app builder for assembling dashboards and internal tools on top of those scripts. The engine is built in Rust with a job queue backed by Postgres, and the project emphasizes performance, publishing benchmarks that show it running workflows substantially faster than orchestrators like Airflow, Prefect, and Temporal. Windmill handles the operational concerns teams would otherwise build themselves, including secrets management, permissions, versioning, retries, concurrency limits, observability, and Git synchronization. It is licensed under AGPLv3 and can be self-hosted for free, while Windmill Labs offers a cloud version and commercial licensing with enterprise features and support. The platform is aimed at engineering and platform teams that want one system spanning internal tools, data pipelines, and infrastructure automation instead of stitching together a workflow engine, a secrets store, and a separate internal-tools builder.
