Semantic Scholar is a free academic search engine built by the Allen Institute for AI, a non-profit research institute, to help researchers find and understand scientific literature. It indexes over two hundred million papers across all fields, drawn from publisher partnerships, aggregators, and web crawls, and applies natural language processing to add features that go beyond keyword search: automatically generated one-sentence summaries called TLDRs that tell a reader what a paper is about at a glance, a citation graph that classifies whether citations are background, methods, or results and highlights influential ones, and Semantic Reader, an augmented PDF reader that shows inline citation cards and definitions. Researchers can create a profile, follow topics and authors through personalized research feeds, and get alerts on new work. Semantic Scholar also publishes an open corpus, datasets, and a public API that many other research tools and applications are built on top of, making it foundational infrastructure for the field. The service is entirely free to use, funded by the Allen Institute and philanthropy rather than subscriptions or advertising, and its data is available for academic and commercial use under open terms. The team also researches and ships experimental tools for question answering and paper recommendation, and partners with other non-profit and academic search projects.
