Heroic Labs builds Nakama, an open-source game server that gives game studios the backend infrastructure needed for multiplayer features like real-time matches, leaderboards, chat, and social systems, without building that notoriously difficult backend infrastructure completely from scratch for every new game. Because Nakama is open-source, studios can self-host it on their own infrastructure for full control over cost and data, or use Heroic Labs' managed cloud offering if they'd rather not operate game server infrastructure themselves, which gives smaller studios a meaningful choice that fully proprietary backend-as-a-service competitors typically don't offer. The platform handles the common but genuinely hard problems in multiplayer game development, including real-time state synchronization, matchmaking, persistent player data, and in-game economies, using server-authoritative logic written in a studio's language of choice, which reduces the ability of players to cheat by manipulating client-side game logic. Nakama integrates with the major game engines studios already use, letting a small team add production-grade multiplayer and live-ops features without hiring a dedicated backend engineering team focused solely on game server infrastructure. Heroic Labs' managed and enterprise offerings add scaling, monitoring, and support for studios running Nakama at meaningful player volume in production. The company is aimed at indie and mid-size game studios that want proven, flexible multiplayer infrastructure without either building it in-house or locking into a closed proprietary backend.
