Xata is a Postgres platform focused on database branching for modern development workflows. After launching in 2022 as an Airtable-style serverless data platform, the company rebuilt the product around standard PostgreSQL, and it now runs plain vanilla Postgres with copy-on-write branching implemented at the storage layer. That means a developer can create an instant, isolated clone of a production-sized database, complete with its data, to use for a feature branch, a pull request preview environment, testing, or an AI agent's workspace, without a lengthy dump-and-restore and without paying for a full second copy of the storage. Branches behave like ordinary Postgres databases reachable with any client, and Xata keeps capabilities such as scale-to-zero with no cold starts, a full-text search engine, file attachments, and PII anonymization for safely using production-like data in lower environments. It is available as a managed cloud service, a self-hostable open-source project, or a bring-your-own-cloud deployment in a customer's own account. Xata is aimed at engineering teams that want production-parity databases for every branch and environment and want to modernize their database workflow without migrating off Postgres. The old always-free hobby tier was retired with the pivot; it is sold as paid plans with a trial.
