Windsurf is an agentic AI development environment, previously known as Codeium, that provides an editor built for AI-assisted coding along with plugins for other IDEs. Its signature feature, Cascade, is an agent that keeps track of what a developer is doing across their codebase, makes coordinated multi-file changes, runs commands, and reasons about the project as a connected whole rather than editing files in isolation. Windsurf also offers fast autocomplete, in-editor chat with full repository context, and features that let the agent preview web apps, inspect elements, and fix issues it observes. It supports multiple underlying models and includes enterprise options for self-hosting, access controls, and keeping code private. The company went through an unusual sequence of events in 2025: a planned acquisition by OpenAI fell through, Google then licensed Windsurf's technology and hired its chief executive and several researchers, and shortly afterward Cognition, the company behind the Devin coding agent, acquired Windsurf's remaining product, brand, and team. Windsurf continues to operate as a product under Cognition. It offers a free tier with limited usage and paid individual and enterprise plans priced by credits and seats, competing directly with other AI-native editors.
