Fly.io is a deployment platform that runs applications as lightweight virtual machines in data centers around the world, letting developers deploy a single application that runs physically close to users on every continent, which reduces latency for a globally distributed user base in a way that a single-region deployment never can. Applications are packaged as Docker containers and deployed with a simple command-line tool, and Fly.io handles the underlying orchestration of running those containers across its global network of regions, including automatic scaling based on incoming traffic and automatic restarts if an instance becomes unhealthy. Its Fly Postgres offering and support for persistent volumes let teams run stateful applications and databases across regions as well, not just stateless web servers, which matters for full-stack applications that need low-latency reads from a database located near the application logic serving a given user. Private networking between an application's own services across regions, along with built-in load balancing and health checks, removes a lot of the manual networking configuration that running a genuinely global infrastructure footprint would otherwise require. Fly.io is aimed at engineering teams building latency-sensitive applications, like real-time collaboration tools, multiplayer experiences, or global consumer apps, where where an application physically runs has a direct, measurable impact on the user experience.
